Natural stone and architecture
Since antiquity marble and natural stone have been representing the materials of excellence in architecture. Natural stones have always been present in architecture. For many years the use of stone materials in the construction sector has been priority for works of particular importance such as churches or public buildings in order to make them last for a long time.
The natural stones that are usually used in construction business are obtained by extraction from different rock types found at different depths in the earth’s crust. There is, by the way, an unbreakable bond between the provenance of the building and the used stone material.
The stone material mostly available on-site, in fact, had a determinant influence on the way of construction and formal languages in more than one phase of history. The reason is that the distribution of superficial lithoid materials is not homogeneous: the surface is characterized by different soil compositions with the presence of specific stone types.
